Job Description

• This opening is for an experienced fiber optic technician. This person will be responsible for optical connector assembly, termination of various configurations offiber optic cable assemblies, and testing of these cable assemblies.
• Report on installations, troubleshooting, and maintaining all fiber optic systems in businesses, homes, schools, and other organizations to ensure that they are working properly.
• Report and assist on measuring the signal strength of television, telephone and internet connections to ensure that there is adequate performance.
• Assist with creating sensors and performing inspections to make sure that the fiber optic systems do not have defects that could undermine performance.
• Conducting regular inspections of the systems with the aim of locating and repairing any defects detected during the inspections.
• Assist and report on premises cabling and running fiber optic cables underground and underwater.
• Determining solutions to any problems and issues that are preventing the fiber optic systems from performing optimally.
• Constructing a proper splice case as well as preparing and maintaining records, diagrams and schematics relating to the splice case.

Minimum requirements:

• 7 years of technical support in a fiber optic manufacturing environment
• Basic knowledge of industry standard environmental and mechanical performance of optical termini / connectors
• Must have good time management skills to work on numerous projects simultaneously
• Ability to use Excel and other Microsoft office products, google map etc
• Auto Cad experience with tooling design background is desired but not required

 

ISO 45001:2018

It will be your responsibility to ensure the implementation of ISO 45001:2018 Health and Safety Management System within your area of responsibility.  This will include: –

• Ensuring compliance with Occupational Health and Safety Policy Statement.
• Promotion of Occupational Health and Safety responsible work practices
• Take cognizance of, react to and comply with policies and procedures developed in terms of the Safety systems.
• Ensure compliance to legal and other requirements with regard to Occupational Health and Safety Management.
• Ensure that planned or proposed activities are subject to the requirements of ISO 45001:2018
• Participate in Safety and health training offered by GCT Fibre
• Hazard identification and reporting; report any defects in the work place, equipment which might endanger health and safety.

As a Worker of GCT Fibre you have the right to:

• Remove yourself from work situations that you consider present an imminent and serious danger to your life or health, as well be aware of arrangements for protecting you from undue consequences for doing so.

• To be consulted on the following issues: establishing the OH&S Policy; assigning organizational roles, responsibilities and authorities, as applicable; determining how to fulfill legal requirements and other requirements; establishing OH&S objectives and planning to achieve them; determining applicable controls for outsourcing, procurement and suppliers; determining what needs to be monitored, measured, and evaluated; planning, establishing, implementation and maintaining and audit program; ensuring continual improvement of the Occupational Health and Safety Management System.

• Participation in the following activities: determining the mechanisms for worker consultation and participation; identifying hazards and assessing risks and opportunities;  determining action to eliminate hazards and reduce OH&S risks; determining competence requirements, training needs, training and evaluating training; determining what needs to be communicated and how this will be done; determining control measures and their effective implementation and use; investigating incidents and nonconformities and determining corrective actions.

Without limiting the general nature of your duties set out above you are required to: –

• Take all steps to ensure that all persons under your charge are fully conversant with the provisions of the LABOUR ACT 2003 and all applicable Occupational Health and Safety Laws as amended or replaced from time to time, and to enforce the provisions of the LABOUR ACT 2003.
• Observe and enforce any codes of practice; any instructions, procedures, directive, permissions, exemptions etc. issued by the SPA or any other person who is authorized to do so.  Any further clarification regarding the interpretation of the LABOUR ACT 2003, Codes of Practice, Instructions, Directions, permissions, Exemptions, etc. will be supplied to you on request.
• Be responsible for the proper discipline of all persons under your charge.
• Provide and maintain a working environment that is safe and without risk to the health of employees within your area of responsibility.
• Identify relevant hazards and assess the related risks within your area of responsibility, to which persons who are not employees may be exposed, and ensure that persons who are directly affected by activities within your area of responsibility are not exposed to any hazards to their health and safety.
• Consider an employee’s training and capabilities in respect of health and safety before assigning tasks to that employee.
• Provide proper and adequate health and safety training.
• Provide employees within your area of responsibility with any information, instruction, training or supervision that is necessary to enable them to perform their work safely and without risk to health.
• Be responsible subject to interpret LABOUR ACT 2003 Part 20 for the safe installation and proper operation, running and maintenance of all machinery.

Take all reasonable measures to ensure that: all safety appliances, mechanisms and guards are maintained in good condition under the provisions of the regulations relating to machinery are fully complied with; the work of any apparatus or machine, the use of which may constitute a danger to any persons ‘safety or health.
