Job Summary:

We seek a motivated Fiber Optic Engineer to join our growing and innovative team. As a Fiber Optic Engineer, you will design, engineer, and map outside plant fiber optic networks to facilitate the networks being constructed or redesigned. The Fiber Optic Engineer will oversee projects and interactions with our  teams and subcontractors throughout Ireland.

Success as a Fiber Optic Engineer will be essential to learn Fiber to the Premise (FTTP), CAD, and GIS functions. 30% of your duties will involve traveling to work sites within Ireland and overseeing installations our teams working with other contractors. You will be required to collaborate with various teams within and outside.

Requirements:

  • Knowledge of fiber telecommunications OSP systems design, construction practices, and industry regulations affecting engineering projects, including Trunk, Trunk Feeder, and Distribution to the home.
  • Maintain, update, and design construction sheets, splicing details, draw said details into construction team, as well as prepare and obtain all necessary state and municipal permits for construction along city streets.
  • Accuracy in construction designs, ensuring that all construction will meet standard practices and safety precautions, and working following standards in all work zones.
  • Visit field locations to secure accurate field notes for staking new construction and replacing or rearranging existing outside plant. This includes obtaining right-of-way permits, encroachments, or easements for construction and may consist of getting sites for new or relocated facilities.
  • Ensures that construction progresses smoothly by determining that preliminary work is completed before the work order is released. This includes right-of-way permits, private party utility easements, encroachment permits, joint-use notification/requests, and coordination with developers, including notification to applicable state, county, municipal, private, or publicly owned power, communications, water, gas, or sewer utilities.
  • Understanding of FTTP brownfield or greenfield
  • Prepares and assists in all transition phases between existing and newly constructed plant facilities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering or an associate degree in a related technical field with a minimum of 2 years of field experience.
  • If no degree a minimum of 5 years of OSP Engineer experience is required.
  • Maintains a current and valid driver’s license to perform the duties of this position.
  • Fiber to the Premise (FTTP) experience is preferred.

ISO 45001:2018

It will be your responsibility to ensure the implementation of ISO 45001:2018 Health and Safety Management System within your area of responsibility.  This will include: –

  • Ensuring compliance with Occupational Health and Safety Policy Statement.
  • Promotion of Occupational Health and Safety responsible work practices
  • Take cognizance of, react to and comply with policies and procedures developed in terms of the Safety systems.
  • Ensure compliance to legal and other requirements with regard to Occupational Health and Safety Management.
  • Ensure that planned or proposed activities are subject to the requirements of ISO 45001:2018
  • Participate in Safety and health training offered by  GCT Fibre
  • Hazard identification and reporting; report any defects in the work place, equipment which might endanger health and safety.

Without limiting the general nature of your duties set out above you are required to: –

  • Take all steps to ensure that all persons under your charge are fully conversant with the provisions of the LABOUR ACT 2003 and all applicable Occupational Health and Safety Laws as amended or replaced from time to time, and to enforce the provisions of the LABOUR ACT 2003.
  • Observe and enforce any codes of practice; any instructions, procedures, directive, permissions, exemptions etc. issued by the SPA or any other person who is authorized to do so.  Any further clarification regarding the interpretation of the LABOUR ACT 2003, Codes of Practice, Instructions, Directions, permissions, Exemptions, etc. will be supplied to you on request.
  • Be responsible for the proper discipline of all persons under your charge.
  • Provide and maintain a working environment that is safe and without risk to the health of employees within your area of responsibility.
  • Identify relevant hazards and assess the related risks within your area of responsibility, to which persons who are not employees may be exposed, and ensure that persons who are directly affected by activities within your area of responsibility are not exposed to any hazards to their health and safety.
  • Consider an employee’s training and capabilities in respect of health and safety before assigning tasks to that employee.
  • Provide proper and adequate health and safety training.
  • Provide employees within your area of responsibility with any information, instruction, training or supervision that is necessary to enable them to perform their work safely and without risk to health.
  • Be responsible subject to interpret LABOUR ACT 2003 Part 20 for the safe installation and proper operation, running and maintenance of all machinery.
  • Take all reasonable measures to ensure that: all safety appliances, mechanisms and guards are maintained in good condition under the provisions of the regulations relating to machinery are fully complied with; the work of any apparatus or machine, the use of which may constitute a danger to any persons ‘safety or health is stopped.
